Topic: ‘Politics & Government’

(Remember that these questions are just discussion starters. You can talk about anything you like!)

1. Would you ever like to be a politician? Why or why not?

2. Do you talk about politics or government much?

3. Explain what you know about the system of government in your country; for example:

• How are people chosen to govern?

• What different levels of government are there? (local, state, national, etc)

• How often does the government change?

• Etc

4. What do you think about your system of government?

5. What do you know about the Australian system of government and what do you think about it?

6. What do you think the attitude of most people is toward your government? (eg respect, despise, don’t care, etc)

7. What do you think should be the main responsibilities of the government (eg education, welfare, defence, economics)? Are there things that shouldn't be any of the government's business?

8. Do you think there is a place for an organisation like the United Nations? What should be its responsibilities?

9. What different political parties make up your government, and how are they different?

10. How old is your system of government, and do you know what it was like before?

11. What are some recent changes your government has made? How were the changes received by the people?
