Topic: ‘Helping Others’

(Make sure you introduce yourselves as necessary, perhaps joined to the first question. Also remember that you don’t have to limit yourselves to these questions.. the more conversation and interaction the better!)

  1. Is there someone who helped you a lot in the past (not in Australia)? What is that person like and how did s/he help you?

  2. Have you done any volunteer work, or do you know anyone else who has? What kind of work was it?

  3. Why do you think people do volunteer work? Do you think they usually enjoy doing volunteer work?

  4. Do you give money to beggars or homeless people? Would you rather give money to beggars or buskers? Why/why not?

  5. Would you offer a beggar a job to help you around your house?

  6. What do you think is the best way to help victims of natural disasters (eg tsunami, earthquakes, hurricanes etc)?

  7. Do you think it is the government's responsibility to provide welfare to those in need?

  8. What do you know about the Australian social security system? What about in your own country? What are good or bad points of either system?

  9. Have you found Australians helpful? Why or why not?

  10. Do you think people are more or less helpful than in the past? Why?

  11. Why do you think sometimes people don't help others?

  12. Is it possible to help others for the wrong reasons? How?

  13. Do you give money to charity organisations? Why?

  14. Do you think having large charity or volunteer organizations is a good idea (eg Red Cross, World Wildlife Fund)? Why or why not?

  15. Do you think people can always 'help themselves' instead of needing to ask others for help?

  16. Why do you think some people don't like asking for help?

  17. Can you remember any situations where you saw someone in need, and decided to help them? What did you do?
